Books for Burmese Refugees
Beneficiaries:
100 young people aged 6 to 22 (average age: 17) living in one of the children’s homes in Nu Po Camp (Thailand), a camp for Burmese refugees located in a remote jungle area 232 km from Mae Sot.
Organisers:
a small group of volunteers who have worked with Burmese refugees and migrant workers in Thailand and who are sensitive to the Burmese cause. Two of the organisers are personally acquainted with the residents of this children’s home. Last year they spent several days visiting with the children and gaining a clear understanding of their needs.
Goals:
• Support the English lessons given at the camp schools (reading skills)
• Provide the children with an entertaining pastime
• Introduce the children to drawing (artistic expression) and comic-strip creation (writing skills)
Supplies to be distributed:
English-language comics/illustrated books, additional English-Burmese dictionaries* and drawing materials (plus other basic supplies as needed). The books will be collected in Europe while the rest of the supplies will be purchased on site.
Project sites:
Paris, France (collection of funds and books), Mae Sot, Thailand (purchase of supplies) and Nu Po Camp (the refugee camp in Thailand where the supplies will be distributed).
Timetable for deployment:
• Phase 1: 26th-28th of February 2010.
• Phase 2: summer of 2010.
Budget:** Approximately €750.00
*Last year we distributed 80 dictionaries, but 20 additional residents have since joined the children’s home.
**The budget will finance the supplies to be distributed, including shipping (the organisers travelling to the camp will finance their own transport) and a celebratory meal for the children, with the possible addition of supplies to meet other urgent needs, for example warm blankets for the 20 children who joined the home in June 2009, as well as vitamins, cleaning supplies and medicine.
